      Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDFs) are tricyclo-aromatic compounds which have been known as extra-toxic substances for many years. This group of compounds can originate from numerous chemical and thermal processes, e.g. metallurgical processes of nonferrous metals and steel, municipal waste incineration, and combustion of coal, diesel oil, gasoline etc. In this paper, the chemical constitutions, structures and properties of PCDD/PCDFs were depicted in detail. On the basis of this, the relative toxicity of PCDD/PCDFs were discussed. A comparison between the acute toxicity of 2,3,7,8-TCDD and that of some well-known poisons such as crototoxin, tetanus-toxin, cyanides(e.g. KCN and NaCN) and phenobarbital shows that PCDD/PCDFs are extra-toxic substances and extremely dangerous to domestic animals and humans. Primary sources of PCDD/PCDFs emissions and relevant control techniques, in particular control devices or systems which destroy or collect PCDD/PCDFs originating from municipal waste incineration installations, were described and explained.
