      Up to now, domestic waste and other combustible municipal solid waste has generally been disposed of by incineration on a grate, where the processes of dr ying, pyrolysis, gasification and incineration subsequently take place in the same reactor, i.e. in the combustion chamber equipped with the grate. In this presentation, two alternativ e thermal-treatment techniques for municipal solid waste, the "Schwel-Brenn-Proces s" (combining pyrolysis and incineration) and the "Thermoselect-Process" (combining drying/pyrolysis and high-temperature gasification), were described in detail. T he performance characteristics of the two techniques were discussed and compared wi th those of the incinerator with grate technology. The advantages of the two techniques and technical barriers for the application of them were illustrated.
