| The Charged Dry-Sorbent Injection (CDSI) is an innovative technique for the desulfurization of flue gas, developed by the Alanco Environmental Resource Corp. in 1990s. In this technique, the sorbent particles are strongly charged with negative electrostatic charges and subsequently injected into the flue gas stream. The charged sorbent particles will repel each other and are hence rapidly dispersed throughout the gas stream. The uniform dispersion of the sorbent particles will increase the contact surface between the particles and the flue gas, and therefore increase greatly the reaction rate and the efficiency of SO2 removal. In this work, solid discards such as carbide slag and caustic-sludge from the chemical industry were considered to be utilized as substitutes for the conventional absorbents of CDSI systems, e.g. hydrated lime. Laboratory and industrial tests with carbide slag and caustic-sludge showed that they could be adopted as absorbents for the desulfurization process in the CDSI system. Furthermore, it was concluded from a comparative test that absorption using carbide slag as the absorbent in the CDSI system was more effective than using caustic-sludge and hydrated lime available on the market. If the two discards, i.e. carbide slag and caustic-sludge, were mixed in a certain proportion and used as the absorbent, the SO2 removal efficiency of the mixture was about the same as hydrated lime. |
